"CO2 injection and (partial) sequestration has already been implemented into the production lifecycle of some hydrocarbon fields as part of EOR projects. However, depleted oil/gas fields may not be the most suitable storage sites in terms of storage capacity and scalability, as well as containment risks or costs. On the other hand, saline aquifers around the world seem to have great potential for CO2 sequestration, but represent a challenge to the industry which has traditionally focused on the extraction of hydrocarbons."
